by mike beggs last modified 2009-08-16 18:47

Figueira sits within a natural bay, 40km West of the famous university town of Coimbra. Large, clean golden sand beaches stretch as far as you can see separated North and South by the river mouth.

It has a truly Mediterranean atmosphere, friendly and laid back.  Traditional high rise apartments and hotels adorn the towns frontage; There and behind lay a network of inexpensive and quirky bars, restaurants and boutique shops. Enjoy a local Mojito or dine on traditional menus comprising of fresh fish, rice, meat, salads, not forgetting the fantastic Portuguese wines.

Of course after an enjoyable day on the water we can provide this experience for you within the comfort of where you are staying.

Turning up to the beach at Figueira you will immediately notice the number of 'guarda-sol' (or beach umbrellas) there are. This place is windy, F4-5 cross shore on the main beach and cross-on on the southern points, cool and building throughout the day until they finally drop off around 7.

These clean cross and onshore winds coupled with safe launching and landing areas enable us to kitesurf safely here amongst few locals. If for some reason the wind is not right we can always surf.

Several sheltered point breaks South of Cape Mondego on the North side of town are considered to hold one of Portugals top 10 waves. Breaking onto a rock bottom ensuring clean long rights for long long rides. Enjoy the paddle out or arrange a boat guaranteeing the spots. A great break for more experienced surfers.

A former WCT beach just South of the river mouth has a point break off the jetty followed by several beach breaks. This beach is great for the experienced and progressing surfers amongst you.
